The first line disagrees with something the reader assumes. It works because agreement is invisible in a feed and disagreement is not — and because the reader who holds the consensus view now has a reason to keep reading: to see whether you can back it up.

Subtle real advantage nobody talks about: if founders can access deeper pools of capital early/quickly, they can get bigger faster without spawning lots of competitors.

I love how once a decade the VC class comes to the epiphany that “actually, sustainable profits are good”, and then parade that insight around as if they’d solved some impenetrable theorem. Then as soon as the next wave of IPOs go pop it’s all “just kidding, GROWTH UBER ALLES!”

How to write one

Name the consensus precisely enough that people recognise their own view in it, then contradict it in one plain sentence. The rest of the post has to earn the contradiction with something specific — a number, a case, a mechanism — or the reader files it as posturing. The best examples in the library take a position the writer can actually defend from their own experience.

The analysis of the strongest example above puts it this way: Preserve the Hook → Landing structure and the contrarian opener opening. Replace the subject matter entirely with the writer’s own product, story and numbers.

Take the top three into the studio with your own subject; the opening move carries over, the words do not.
