How to open a post with a number, and when not to
A figure in the first line does the work an adjective cannot — but the library says it is not a guarantee. Which numbers travel, what the second line has to do, and how to write one in ViralLoop starting from the board.

Over a thousand posts in the library open with a number. They reach about the same median as the library as a whole — which means the opening is not doing the work on its own. The number that travels is specific, surprising, and followed by a line that says what it cost or what it changed. This tutorial is about that second line as much as the first.
Start from the board
Posts whose first line puts a figure in front of the reader before anything else. Read ten in a row and notice which numbers made you stop: the round ones, or the exact ones?

The first is a result the reader did not expect from that source — a creator saying what a platform paid. The second is a number set against another number in the next line (a retailer's), so the surprise is in the comparison. Neither would work as "a lot of money" or "a huge valuation". The exactness is the claim.

Which number
- The one that would surprise a reader who knew nothing else. Not your biggest number — your most unexpected one.
- Exact over round. 4,982 is more believable than 5,000, and reads as observed rather than asserted.
- Yours. A number you can stand behind if someone asks how you got it. The library's rule for remixing is the same as the rule for publishing: a draft never states a figure you did not give it, and neither should you.
The steps, in ViralLoop
- Open the board above and Save the two or three posts whose numbers stopped you into a board of your own — "Numbers, done well" is a fine name.
- On each, write a note: what specifically the number did. "The number is a cost, not a win." "The number is set against another number." These notes ride into the prompt as your intent.
- Remix the board. In the brief, write your number first and what it cost or changed second — two sentences, no adjectives.
- Take → Opening on the source whose move you want. Generate three.
- Keep the draft whose second line earns the first. If none does, Refine → version 2 with the note "line two must say what the number cost or changed" and Change → Specificity.
When not to
When the number is the only interesting thing you have. A post that opens with a figure and has nothing behind it teaches the reader that your numbers are bait. The board above is full of posts where the number was the door, not the room.
