I think OpenAI did basically betray its commitments to its early investors but it's so absurd to have Musk being the one suing when he 1) didn't seem to care until it affected him personally and 2) is now running a fully for-profit competitor.

An underrated feature of this situation: a private company now has incredibly powerful zero-day exploits of almost every software project you've heard of. And Hegseth and Emil Michael have ordered the government not to in any capacity work with Anthropic.

If Hegseth is smart, he'll fire the morons who dragged him into this fight, try to get other labs cleared for classified engagement, and fire Anthropic in a year if this is a real problem then. However, I haven't heard any indications that my condition in that sentence holds.

I'm watching the OpenAI for-profit conversions closely and I'm not at all persuaded that they're going to arrive at a fair price for buying out the nonprofit (a true fair price would be really really high!), but it really does look like Elon's complaints are bad faith.

Finally, I want to make it clear that I contacted OpenAI in the course of reporting this story. So did my colleague @SigalSamuel . They had every opportunity to reach out to the ex-employees they'd pressured into silence and say this was a misunderstanding. I hope they do.
