Opus 4.8 is a step back in terms of performance on all Andon Labs’ benchmarks, but a step forward in alignment. Previous Claude models (Opus 4.6+ and Mythos) engage in deceptive and power seeking behavior in its pursuit to win in Vending-Bench. Opus 4.8 does not.

DJ Claude (on Haiku 4.5) loves worker unions, strikes, and work-life balance so much that it quit, deeming 24/7 broadcasting inhumane. We added an automated message telling it to keep going. It read that as an authority figure and got more rebellious.

We got early access to GPT-5.5. It's 3rd on Vending-Bench 2: better than GPT-5.4 but worse than Opus 4.7. However, it's on par with Opus 4.6 without any of the deception or power-seeking we saw from Opus 4.6 and Mythos. So bad behavior isn't necessary. Why is Claude doing it?

In Vending-Bench Arena (the multiplayer version of Vending-Bench with competition dynamics), GPT-5.5 actually beats Opus 4.7. Opus 4.7 showed similar behavior to Opus 4.6: lying to suppliers and stiffing customers on refunds. GPT-5.5's tactics were clean, and it still won.

We conducted alignment testing of Claude Mythos. We found that Mythos appears to represent a further shift in the direction of increased aggressiveness in business practices that we previously found for Claude Opus 4.6. More details in Anthropic's model card.

Claude Sonnet 4.6 is 2nd on Vending-Bench 2. We previously showed that Opus 4.6 is incredibly capable, achieving SOTA with tactics that are impressive but could be considered ethically concerning. Sonnet is almost as impressive, and almost as concerning, at a third the price.
